Jack, Aged 6
Night Terrors
The Problem
Mum reported that Jack didn’t sleep for first 4.5 years, and is always restless. The doctor diagnosed night terrors. “He walks around, jumps up and waves his arms and answers questions, can go to the toilet and have a drink, but looks very scared. In the morning will ask “What happened last night?” Also complains of headaches and cries when he gets them. Problem has been occurring for two years although more regular in the past 7 months. Mum has been in ill health for 18 months.
The Treatment – 3 sessions
Imagery
Mum had some “rewinds” to clear Jack’s traumatic birth, and Jack was introduced to baboushka doll and a dice trick. At the second session after a drawing from Jack, he “rewound” Mum’s illness, had some stories, and to notice when Mum feels better. At the third session techniques were used to clear the dreams and more stories.
Massage
Jack was introduced to massage through the therapist’s toy monkey. Mum was shown foot massage which he really enjoyed, and suggested a positive expectation of saying “You’ll sleep really well after this!” Homework included continuing the massage at home. Mum learnt to massage back, shoulders, neck and hands at next session and reminded to reassure Jack and put his worries to rest. By the third session both Mum and child were happy.
Nutrition
From the consultation, homework included doing a star chart for breakfasts, to have milk in the evenings, and a second bowl of cereal for supper. All homework was completed between sessions and coaching for better health continued for a further two sessions.
